Course Description
Drawing Studio is an ongoing art course for aspiring artists interested in learning to draw and developing a visual art portfolio. This is a beginner class, or can be used as an open studio still life session for artists wanting to hone their skills.
The goal of the course is to learn to draw from observation. Each class will include a short lecture and demonstration of concepts followed by drawing warm ups and a longer study. Students will seek to unlearn iconographic drawing and instead see the world through the elements of design: line, shape, form, space texture, value, and color. Seeing through spatial relationships will allow students to create fully realistic drawings.
Drawing is the foundation of all visual art, design, and craft professions. Drawing skill offers strong advantages in any career allowing for excellent visual communication skills. Students will not only hone their technical abilities, but will engage in productive group critique to develop a vocabulary for communicating visual concepts and interpreting meaning in art.
At the end of each 8 week term, students will have the opportunity to display their artwork in a small gallery style showing open to friends and family to check in on progress and offer feedback.

Instructor bio:
My name is Evan Johnson, I’m a papermaker and printmaker working in my hometown of Lawrence KS. I began making art in high school learning drawing and painting from the talented Carolyn Berry and Pat Nemchock who helped me gain entrance to the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation’s summer program. I then moved to Seattle, WA where I got a BFA from Cornish College. There I gained a love for printmaking and hand papermaking which led me to intern with Green Banana Paper where I made paper from banana trees on the island of Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia. There I learned the true potential of hand papermaking as a business and decided to launch my own, Fred Paper Co. back in Lawrence. It is my goal to make paper from the waste of other businesses and craft beautiful art papers and stationery. I have great respect for the people who have taught me along the way and look forward to learning more about life and my craft through teaching. Techniques used to create art are applicable to all aspects of life and all fields of study, and I hope to continue the legacy of passing these techniques to students to enrich their lives and abilities.
